Training
Prior insurance experience is not necessary; we provide comprehensive and on-going training!

Job Description

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.3 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.

The selected candidate will serve as Borough Distribution Engineer; will be responsible for operational decisions related to the water supply distribution system for up to two Boroughs or Units within the Bureau's Distribution Operations Division; will provide engineering directions related to water main construction; initiate projects for capital construction and new builder locations; review, approve and make recommendations on contract plans; oversee water main construction and prepare Master Plan for the Trunk Water Main System; coordinate all shutdowns of trunk water mains and regulators throughout Staten Island and Brooklyn, provide direction for emergencies related to low pressure and determine affected areas; evaluate and implement changes in the system to provide adequate supply and pressure; interface with other agencies and DEP personnel concerning related projects and/or emergencies; supervise a staff of Engineers and Technicians and ensure staff is trained in Agency policies; conduct complex engineering studies and in depth data analysis; and prepare detailed reports.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer is required. In addition, candidates must have six (6) years of full-time paid experience in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical or air pollution control engineering work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative engineer.

Preferred Skills

• Candidate must hold, or obtain within 1.5 years of employment, and maintain a New York State Department of Health Grade D Water System Operator Certificate.

• Candidate must have good verbal and writing communication skills, some computer skills, strong knowledge in hydraulics and familiarity with water treatment; be familiar with infrastructure construction with an expertise in water main installation.
